CGATS.5-200x (Graphic technology - Spectral measurement and colorimetric computation for graphic arts images) offers guidelines for 3 options: black backing, white backing and "self-backing" and a whole annex entitled "Sample backing during measurement" to explain why one might be more appropriate than another.
