Photoshop only uses them if you select ColorSync Workflow and few do this.
Plus with Bridge color syncing, it's not useful or necessary anymore. Apple
applications like Preview ignore this setting. The private email I got from
inside Apple since my last post:

I'm not sure this will work or even cause harm to the system. Worth a try.
Bottom line is Nikon (and others) are going to have to build a UI in their
products to allow users to select profiles rather than assume it's being
provided by the OS which in the end, probably makes more sense.

I think Apple just removed a very confusing and not at all useful option
from Tiger! Essentially the old preferences were not being used correctly
nor as designed by Apple. So they got tossed.
