Right, but using a device link forces explicit control over the process used in the linking, while an invisible "behind the scenes" link is hard to observe or control.

I would consider any profile using substantial gamut compression of in-gamut colors using the colorimetric intent a major bug. If the source and destination color spaces are reasonably similar, it should be possible to preserve the original color appearance rather well.

Right, but I don't think that the original posting specified the intent used, so maybe perceptual was used in the destination profile.

Using colorimetric is till not going to be as good as a perceptual
mapping tailored to the two gamuts in question.
