What is the quality of the driver, and the device linearisation ?
I do fashion, and portraits mainly and it's not gamut that I really
need, it's subtlety in the dark tones, eg. shadows and brown or black
hair.
With my Epsons I never had a gamut issue, in fact the 1270 gamut was
huge, but the lousy driver made some tones unprintable eg. shadows on
the neck. Profiling can only go so far to fix a bad linearisation.
It has been said on the net that the hi-end device (4800 upwards) are
linearised at the factory. But is this also the case for the new 2400?
Most of us smalltimers (an american friend would say little pishers)
do not own a RIP, and have no patience to adjust Gutenprint, hence no
way to fix bad linearisation
I reiterate - in 2 years of profiling and using a reasonable number
of small printers, for making prints for clients as well as my own
use, I have never suffered severely from a gamut issue - but often
from hardware problems (paper feed, ink blockages, printer drift,
bronzing, and worst of all, print fading) as well as linearisation
issues and the difficulty of getting supplies as models change.
Of course, I see other printers out there (eg. HP, Canon and Pictro)
with a superior gamut - but if that were the crucial issue we would
all already be HP, Fuji or Canon customers ...
