Huh? I don't disagree with this statement.

No it doesn't.
Really? Have you used it? Tested it? I've spent days with it, and I
disagree with your conclusion. I've gone so far as to replace the
internal reference numbers for the ColorChecker with values that I
measured myself with an i1. Fors' script works well and does what its
supposed to do.
When I built the conversion tables I spoke before, I did not improve
the accuracy of anything. I did weed out the variability of anything. I
came up with a conversion that got me close to where I needed to be. If
I read the script correctly, it's creating a conversion based on the
values of a ColorChecker. Am I correct?
If the RAW converter would allow you to use a profile of your camera,
then you shouldn't have to "calibrate" it.
However, the calibration script is pretty analogous to running a
linearization on a RIP - it gets the camera back to a known state.
Would a custom profile "simplify" the process? Not if it forced me to
use RAW software that otherwise crippled my workflow.
How would it cripple your workflow for ACR (or any other converter) to
allow you to use your own profile?
And camera profiles often don't prove to be that useful in
"real-world" situations, where the light is constantly changing and
where you can't include a gray card or ColorChecker card in the scene.
Do you have to reshoot your ColorChecker at each situation to use the
Fors' script? I'm truly asking? I don't know.
How does Fors' script stabilize the lighting conditions? Okay, yeah,
that one is smart-@*$. Sorry.
The mechanics of building a camera profile are trivial. Making it
work consistently is not. Integrating it into a professional workflow
can also be difficult, depending on the RAW software used. What are
your recommendations for profiling, say, a Nikon D2X with RAW
processing using Nikon Capture?
Derrick Brown answered that one earlier in the thread. By the way,
Nikon tech support informed me that sRGB and Adobe RGB 98 are
"device-specific". Really. They did.
Profile the converted output and then don't touch the RAW controls?
Talk about a throwback to scanning software...! And what target?
Profiling a camera and profiling a scanner are worlds apart.
Use of the RAW controls would be editorial. Maybe it is all ready.
I'll be in Ecuador for three weeks overlapping the GATF conference
this year, shooting tons of RAW files.
Have fun.
