Yes, it will be a long time. Keep in mind that the reason the current
experiments have been successful is because there was good knowledge of
the composition of the materials in the paintings being photographed.
Different pigments or materials would significantly decrease the
results. The targets that were used had been optimized for the pigments
that were known to be in these particular paintings. So using a
different target or different materials in the painting changes the
success of the results.
Research is currently being done to find a good 'generic' target for
typical artists materials, but even when that is successful, it still
will never translate directly to applying this technique to any general
scene (natural or otherwise). The spectral curves are estimated from
only six channels, so the selection of target is crucial and you will
need a target that has samples with similar spectral composition as the
scene being photographed.
It's very exciting work indeed, but it's also true that general
commercial solutions are very far away.
