I think the ColorEyes marketing hype's reckless repurposing of the term is
the source of confusion for many people:
"Gamma, Gamma, Gamma. The debate rages on about how to set up your monitor
and build profiles. A new patented technology for ICS called L* assures that
your monitor will display great detail from the brightest near white, all
the way down to the nearly black. We all want the most from our display
systems and L* makes it happen"
Exactly what it is they think they have a patent for is never specified.
