Well yes, it shows you the mapping boundaries based on the color space
you
pick for encoding. What mechanism would you want to show how "things
are
gonna be mapped inside"?
A custom profile to map to. That's all included.
"Accurate" with what respect?
Accurate with respect to what the scene looked like.
What occurs to me, and maybe this is what you're bringing up, is that
the camera should have a MUCH broader response than what you can
measure from a reflective target.
Indeed! The limitation is the target.
Then it's just a
matter of designing a better target, of sorts.
Well sure but that's going to be kind of hard to do when you consider
what
we run into in so many scenes.
Shouldn't be tough. What you want to map is the camera's response to
light, right? If the scene you're shooting has light that is casted one
way or another, that should be rendered by the converter —
automatically — without operator intervention (other than establishing
the correct color-space or profile). If the scene was brightly lit then
the resulting shot should be bright. If the scene was dark, then the
shot should be dark. If one could establish the true gamut and response
of the camera then the rest has all ready been done.
I just can't see why any manufacturer wouldn't allow for the use of
custom profiles. It's just silly. I REALLY don't understand that
position from Adobe. I don't think we should "throw out the baby with
the bath water" because of limitations in the target. The nail was a
really bad idea until some guy invented a hammer.
