I'm guessing that many users of color management solutions avoid editing
profiles because they simply don't know how to approach it. Andrew's
comments point to this. How in the ham sandwhich would a novice have any
idea that editing the proofing portion of a profile should be done first?
Real World Color Management (1st ed.) offers a skeletal introduction to
profile editing, but I think the community would benefit from a meatier
discussion on the topic. Sample edits, the reasoning behind them, and the
order in which they were executed paired with screenshots from various
profile editors would be incredibly useful in structuring our thinking
about profile edits.
Anyone want to take on the task? ;-)

The advent of these visually-based, low-priced profile editors could be a
mixed blessing, as more and more people -- with varying levels of expertise

understand the consequences of what they are doing, and with results that
remain to be seen -- and carefully appraised.

At the very least, GretagMacbeth (and others using visual only profile
editors) needs to stress and educate is the proofing portion of the profile
needs to be evaluated and fixed FIRST. If not, a lot of people are going to
be chasing their tails editing profiles.
