The way I see the infromation presened in the MS White Paper on WCS (p11), the PCS looks to be CIEXYZ, rather than CIELab. Based on the work of Bruce Lindbloom, describing the problems of the non-linearity of the Lab color space, the exclusive use of XYZ as the PCS, could be a step forward. However, I don't know the problems of the XYZ color space.
