David...forgive me, I'm not sure what an "advanced-beginner" is.
It sounds like you are wanting to create a monitor profile for your
laptop..am I right?
If so, the walk-through set of sliders you are referring to will simply
produce a roughly accurate calibration of your screen...it will not produce
a proper monitor profile...for this you need to obtain a suitable device
(colorimeter/spectrophotometer,etc..) to place on the screen to measure a
series of test patches, which are then referenced to a known set of data and
a suitable profile is created.

Again, I'm not sure what you mean by "match"?...A monitor profile is created
specifically for that one monitor...you have one for yours, the stock
library should have a monitor profile for every one of their displays too.
That means that what you see should be the same as that which they see...of
course, in practice, this rarely happens, but should get your displays
closer to each other. It is a completely pointless exercise trying to adjust
your screen visually to match someone else's.
