Hi Rolf,
The only advise I can offer here can and is handled differently from
Rip to Rip and will also be handled differently on various medias.
Consider the light inks a diluted version of the photo version. They
will have less of a pigment load and will visually give you smoother
contone (less grain) in your highlights. Once the photo color kicks
in the light color will ramp down. The only advantage to having a 5%
light ink in the solid would be to eliminate artifacts created from
bad screening algorithms or print head issues. In fact I have heard
and seen Rips starting the Photo color much earlier to eliminate or
mask banding. Keep in mind that 5% light ink still has the same
droplet volume as the Photo color. So raising that number could
effect your TIC which was most likely already established earlier on.
Some Rip manufacturers will take full advantage of Epson's variable
droplet technology and let you select specific droplet combinations
between the Photo and light colors to get the cleanest dither pattern
possible given the printer/ink/media combination.
But, before you do anything make sure all nozzles are firing and you
perform ahead alignment on the stock your running. Not everyone has
the luxury of having multiple devices side by side yielding vastly
different print quality. The fix for one printer may not be the same
for another. And on top of that the machine may also be within Epson
Spec. One just prints way better.
Thanks,
Troy

3. Good news for iterative calibration. K3 inks are pretty much
stable after 5 min. for all colors, compared to the older ones at
15-20min. and longer for some of the colors.
I was pretty much impressed to see that a mediawedge measured
after 30mins, 45mins and 12 hours was within a Delta E of 0,1 CIELab
which could be in the tolerance of an EyeOne.
As for the light ink issue( not the light light), it's pretty sad
that there
is no really usable advise to find. Some propose to use 5% light
inks in
the 100% solids, others recommend 0%.
Anyone else here to comment on that?
Rolf
