This thread has done an excellent job of showing why it's needed. I
think in the past, when I've posted a feature request about this, very
few of the people who look at this part of the Photoshop User to User
Forum understand what it's about. I suspect it's most needed by people
like me with moderate, but not expert CMYK knowledge and only
occasional need. I assume those that need to do this every day purchase
a program that will allow it. However, even a CMYK beginner soon learns
that the ability to set Black plate generation is a big benefit to
quality CMYK output. I'm sure Bruce or other's could add to the list of
what they feel are the minimum CMYK profile adjustment features that
Photoshop should provide.
I think you're being a little unfair to Adobe. The functionality
you are requesting is a core piece of a profiling suite. It's
a fairly specialized thing to do right (by comparison, most of
what Photoshop does is fairly straightforward). Would you really
want to buy a version of Photoshop that costs significantly more,
so you can have that particular feature ? If you've a need to
regenerate profiles with different black separations, then perhaps
you should buy a package that is good at that, and also provides other
complimentary color tools.
