I guess what I'm trying to say -- certainly not meaning to disparage those who have endeavored to move the field forward with high-end solutions -- is that the common need to have flexible black generation is thwarted by the apparent fact that users must choose between:
1) paying several times the cost of the entire Adobe Creative Suite to be able to generate custom profiles -- and still have to go back and create more if the current situation warrants a different black curve or start point
2) using the legacy tools within Photoshop, and further stalling a modern standard of CMYK color management -- but having many of the controls they want
3) dumbing down the separation process to a one-size-fits-all solution
I think that the first person who creates a dynamically adjustable solution to replacing the funtionality of legacy CMYK at a price point that will be widely accepted by designers and production houses has the potential to be a big winner.

If memory serves me right, there was a color scientist at Imation that
made a Mac control panel that allowed one to adjust black generation or
preserve black channel in an existing profile. I am sorry, but I have
forgotten his name. Harold, you are working with this fellow in the
Imation, Creo, Kodak merger. What has happened in this area? It seemed
like a good idea, but did not seem to go anywhere.
