Epson drivers and profiles - how do they work ?

(Probably an old chestnut, but here goes:)
I've just been going through the exercise of trying to
profile an Epson R1800 via it's MSWindows drivers,
and was wondering if someone had figured out what
actually goes on under the covers in regard to ICC profiles.
I'm printing from (an old version) of Photoshop, and printed
the profiling test chart with "Printer Color Management" turned
on (presumably this is a Photoshop option), and in
the Epson printer configuration I selected "ICM", and
then "Off (No Color Adjustment)".
I then made my profile, and tested it by creating a compensated
raster file (the equivalent of Photoshop "Profile to Profile"),
and printed it using the same setup as the profiling test chart.
So far, so good (well, not actually good, but that's a different
story I think).
If I now install my profile by copying it to the right
directory, and registering it with the printer, and now
select that profile in the Epson configuration, and print
the uncompensated raster file, I get a different result from
above.
Has anyone untangled what goes on ?
If the Epson driver has been given the device profile,
how does it know the raster colorspace profile ? Does
it get given it by the application (in this case Photoshop),
or is it using some other source profile ? (the results
would suggest the latter.)
If I turn off the (PhotoShop), "Printer Color Management",
and try printing the uncompensated raster file, I get yet a
different result.
For Photoshop to be handling the color conversion properly,
it would need to get the device profile from the Epson
driver. The above results seem to indicate that this
isn't happening, but the results are different to
"Off (No Color Adjustment)", so what _is_ it doing ?
Does the the OSX Epson driver operate similarly to the
MSWindows one, or does it have its own set of peculiarities ?
Graeme Gill.
