I use Lightroom and have been using it for free in Beta for months now. No problem at all and I can fit the application on a memory stick.
And that program was built by Macromedia/Adobe so it has some rock solid engineering behind it.
Plus it works on G4s and is fast.
Now all they have to do it update Photoshop for the 21st century . . . ;-) How about taking a cue from Apple and having layer nodes and multiple bit depths? Shake does that pretty well.
I think Apple is a master at farming work to other companies that know what they are doing. I don't think they are good at building their own software. They are great at implementing standards, creating standards, and combining software and hardware. But the digital world is almost like Internet Explorer vs Netscape back in the day. There's a lot of competition for turf that needs to be hammered out so us users can sleep at night and know our software actually renders shadow detail correctly out of a RAW file.
