The most interesting note is that the client went and used the original "broken"
profile from May and now it works (grayscale ramp test and everything).
How is that possible that it was "broken" in May but has magically "fixed"
itself in July?

Sounds like they experienced the Photoshop 9.0.1 with MacOS 10.4.6 color management problem and have since moved on to 10.4.7.

If you set them up with a black and white printing RIP or a 9800 you would be doing them a big favor!
