Hello List Members,
Normally I am a silent reader of the constant interactions within this
group because I have only been working in the Color Management field for
three years, but a client has had a repeating problem that I cannot
explain except for operator error. If someone could help me put my finger
on the cause I would be eternally grateful.
Here goes:
I created a custom profile for their Epson 9600 and the Hahnemuhle Photo
Rag paper in January. I received a call in May saying that the profile had
"broken" and was no longer printing the grayscale correctly. I went to the
site and double-checked the printing process just to make sure all was
being done correctly. I also ended up with a grayscale ramp with a
light-medium gray band that was decidely cyan. I wasn't sure what had
caused the shift because there was no change in the inkset or the paper
being used. In an effort to save them time and money I just went ahead and
created a new profile.
The new profile worked great . . . until I received another call last week
from the client explaining that the newest profile had "broken". Sure
enough, I went to test it and it was the exact same problem as before.
This time I want to get to the bottom of the problem because in my
experience there is no such thing as a profile "breaking". The most
interesting note is that the client went and used the original "broken"
profile from May and now it works (grayscale ramp test and everything).
How is that possible that it was "broken" in May but has magically "fixed"
itself in July?
Can anyone shed some light on this situation. Is is something incredibly
obvious? I should note that this printer exists at a professional
photographer's studio and is linked to a primary computer designated for
printing. In addition, the main print person (my client contact) also
prints directly from her mac G5. They are not using a RIP because it is
not necessary for their needs, but rather are using the standard Epson
9600 driver.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Best,
Kerry Mansfield
