Thank you for the explanation. I understand now. I was not aware that this
is standard way in which the industry specifies a display's viewing angle.
Personally, I find it an odd way, because it does not really indicate at
what angle an average viewer will *start* perceiving a noticeable shift in
appearance. Although a "noticeable shift in appearance" is also partially a
subjective criterion, there must be a way to appraise this feature
objectively in a way that is more easily relatable to everyday use.

Though what you say makes perfect sense, it's hard for an interested buyer
to appraise a display like the wide-gamut MultiSync LCD2180WG at, say, the
local mall or computer store.
I live in the SF Bay Area, and can always go to MacWorld (starting today,
through the 13th) and hope to have a chance to see one of these monsters on
the Expo floor, but people in other parts of the country may not be so
lucky.
