I'm in the middle of a publishing project and I've received
contradictory information
from different people at the publishers.
the prepress guy and I had a conversation where he basically said,
take the press profile
they sent me, which I used to make the CMYK conversion, send this
CMYK file along with a
proof, which I made by ripping my original RGB file through a press
simulation also using
their profile.
The screen to proof correspondence was very good, and the test
prints that came back were also very close.
Then the AD sent me this "essay" about sending them only RGB files
that had my monitor
profile embedded.
Further, that and proof made outside their "closed loop" would be
meaningless, which, of course was already patently false.
This just seems wrong to me, as I've been in this business a long time.
can I get a witness.

Well Jon, they are both correct, it depends on the customer.
You are well educated in color management, but many people that
supply files to printers are not. That you have spoken directly to
prepress and had test prints (from the press?) returned that were
close to your screen and output means you are now becoming part of
that "closed loop" the AD was referring to.
For a large percentage of customers, the AD's instructions will
probably result in a better project. The RGB files received can be
separated to CMYK by the printer, using the largest color gamut the
press and paper for the project can support.
The subject of "proofs" is more complex. While there are a number of
digital color printing devices that can simulate closely how a
printing press will render a particular image on paper, none of them
use exactly the same process. The printer can fine-tune their
in-house device, and then be able to make a "contract proof" they can
say will match very closely on press.
You wouldn't believe how many times we have received supplied
"proofs" from "free with computer purchase" ink jet printers.
Our contract proofing device is a $200,000.00 Fuji Final Proof.
