I don't think this is really a gamut issue, it sounds more of a
driver/linearization/profile problem.
It could also be that you are seeing sharpening halos.
Maybe you could give more details about whether the image was
sharpened, how you are printing it (with Epson driver, with a RIP
etc), whether you are an expert user of the i1 ? The latter is
important because without the new guide and backing plate an
occasional user of the i1 can incur measure errors that lead to
seriously problematic profiles.
Generally speaking, anything run through a digital process tends to
end up with shadow detail blocking and highlight issues, from capture
to print. For those of us who do our own fine art printing, brutal
retouching is an effective way to solve them ;)
As advertsing is allowed on this list I would suggest I make you a
DTP-70/ Monaco Profiler profile with my usual pay-if-you-like-it
clause, and you see whether it improves matters.

Ciaran Rooney caressed the keys and queried:
--------
I am printing a shot of a model on a 9800 using ultrachrome inks and photoblack.
The media is fujihunt satin which is very similar to epson semi gloss.
I have created a profile for this paper using an eye-one and profilemaker 5.
The colours are well in gamut before conversion.
The problem is a get a kind of digital blooming or halo in the
transition point between the hotspots and midtones on the face.
The image has been professionaly photographed and scanned so there is
no issue there.
I have converted using both perceptual & relative colourimetric
rendering intents.
I have printed it on epson semi-gloss using the supplied epson 9800
paper profile as a control and maybe i get ever so slightly less
blooming.
What does the group think i am seeing ?
Is it the limited range of pigment inks or something else?
