This is discussion is quite interesting to me as I'm embarking on
utilizing high patch count targets for use with a GMG Colorproof RIP
which uses non-ICC device linking technology. Some of what I mention
may or may not apply to ICC technology.
The key area(s) I'm focusing on is in the extreme highlight and
extreme shadow end of the scales. With some of the current "press"
oriented profiling charts, there can be huge gaps or holes in terms
of data points/patches in the shadows. Both the ECI2002 and IT8.7/4
targets do not address combinations between 85% and 100%, leaving the
profile to "guess" what is happening between those points. Since a
press behaves more-or-less linearly or predictably in this range,
this gap is not so much an issue.
But with an inkjet printer where you are likely to have very non-
linear behavior in terms of hue, chroma, etc., I think this makes a
good case for more accurately "mapping" this non-linearity near the
gamut extremes of the inkjet which means, in my mind, giving the
"profiling" application more data points where the majority of this
non-linear becomes manifest.
Currently, I'm toying with a profiling chart in the neighborhood of
11,000 patches. My sort of arbitrary goal is to keep the patch count
under what it takes to fill about 6 pages for a DTP70 (you can
squeeze nearly 1,900 patches on a single page when you set the patch
size and leader/trailer space to their minimums). Even with this
"extreme" patch count, that still amounts to only about 20-30 minutes
of measurement time on a DTP70.
