The basic tradeoff as you add patches is between accuracy (which
increases with # of patches) and smoothness (which in many cases
decreases with # of patches).
The more linear a device is, the fewer patches should be required.
Even with a ridiculously large number of patches you're still likely
to be sampling a fairly small subset of the device's gamut. So if
adding lots of patches lets you reproduce 15% of the device's colors
very accurately instead of 7%, but makes the profile much less
smooth, it may well not be a worthwhile trade-off.
On the Epson Ultrachrome generation (prior to K3), I experimented
with as many as 12500 patches (yes, I'm completely nutso), but found
that the sweet spot was somehere around 2500 patches. 2500 patches
produced a noticably better result than 918 on photographic images,
12500 produced a somewhat worse result than either 918 or 2500 on the
same material. For spot color rendering, more patches may provide an
advantage, but the smoothness suffers.

hahaha.... I'm not that crazy yet either, it was a hypothethical
question... no 30,000 patches target here.
