Increased noise from error is undoubtedly a significant factor, but
the the assumption that the underlying device response is in fact
smooth is one I wouldn't care to make with inkjets! (I should have
qualified my response to make it clear that I was referring to inkjet
rather than some other marking technology.)
I believe the basic premise of Graeme's comment holds: if giving the
profiling application less data yields better results than giving it
more, something is wrong: either the data carries a hefty amount of
error, or the profiling app is not doing what it should.
Of course I guess trying to fit everything into a fixed interpolation
model is largely to blame. But the profiling application, aware of
these limitations, should apply whatever smoothing and/or correction
to the data is needed to make it play nice with the interpolation that
will happen downstream.
I remember PrintOpen has a "smooth data" checkbox. I also remember
CompassProfiler, one of the old "superstars" of profiling, had a lot
of smoothing settings (2d, 3d, radius, etc).
