Of course I guess trying to fit everything into a fixed interpolation
model is largely to blame. But the profiling application, aware of
these limitations, should apply whatever smoothing and/or correction
to the data is needed to make it play nice with the interpolation that
will happen downstream.
I remember PrintOpen has a "smooth data" checkbox. I also remember
CompassProfiler, one of the old "superstars" of profiling, had a lot
of smoothing settings (2d, 3d, radius, etc).
Not to mention RTKitPro, which offered 6,000,000 options, thirty or
so of which did something useful....
It's a curve-fitting problem. Devices that are either linear or
describable by a simple power curve can be characterized with very
few patches. Devices that are highly non-linear need more patches,
but the more points you add to a curve, the less smooth it becomes.
Data smoothing to a degree appropriate to iron out instrument error
is all well and good, but smoothing beyond that is an exercise in
wishful thinking.
To remove the interpolation as a factor, you'd need to measure 16.7
million patches for an RGB inkjet. I haven't done that <s>. There's
probably a point well south of 16.7 million patches where things
start to smooth out again, but with Epson Ultrachrome (and almost
certainly with K3 too), it's well north of 12500 patches.
