OK. Colorburst does use a UV filtered spectrophotometer for all their measurements. If you want to relinearize or PrintCertify color output a UV spectrophotometer is required, preferably the same manufacturer too. The X-Rite Pulse uses a different spectral measurement interval from Eye One which might impact results. So you might consider the Pulse as an option if you are upgrading from the Eye One. Frankly you could just add a CMYK module to your Eye One device and be on your way.
There are many reasons for choosing a RIP over the manufacturers print driver. With regards to color, allowing you to create CMYK allows you to control gray balance correctly, set proper ink limits, and create linearization curves using a color measurement device is the only way to ensure consistency. Print drivers do not support color measurement devices necessitating new ICC profiles if the color deviation to noticeable.
So if you goal is consistency then a RIP is required along with a color measurement device. If you are considering the ColorBurst RIP then the X-Rite Pulse would be a good choice.
