Ok, you lost me.

L* = 116(Y/Yn)1/3 -16 (equation #1)
Yn is said to be the value of a perfect diffuser for white.  So I don't understand what n represents, neither consequently do I understand Yn.

But can someone then explain what is Yn named as reference white ?

Cap Y times the variable n...Cap Y out of xyY or XYZ is the luminance value, with the other two defining color.
