Regarding luminance, as may have already parlayed its only one
component of the viewing "environment".
The best situation is to create an environment where ambient light is
low, consistent and 100 cd/m on the
monitor is perfect. We recommend 100 cd/m or sometimes bump it to 105
cd/m to overcome the level
of ambient light.
Keep in mind that the backlight on a lcd panel IS a wear and
tear item, meaning the higher you run the
luminance over 100 cd/m the faster your backlight will loose its
ability to properly and consistently hold
a good luminance value while calibrating correctly. Most flat panels
can produce a luminance value of
over 200 cd/m, but that would toast your backlight in very little time,
and there is no reason to run it that high.
Eizo recommends 100 cd/m, while stipulating in the warranty that if you
run it in excess of that it could
effect your warranty coverage. This should be of course taken within
reason.
Something else to keep in mind: unless you switch your monitor off, the
backlight is running, and "using up"
its finite life span. We suggest clients simply power the monitor off
if they will be away for more than 1/2 hour,
as the warm up time on lcd's is not long.
