Kevin,
I don't think there's any special voodoo behind the "figuring where the
hooks lie on an ab plot" trick. As you noted, EFI Colorproof shows this
phenomenon graphically as lines radiating from the center on an ab plot
representing increased percentages of CMY inks. The whole idea behind this
technique is for the user or the software to pick a point where the chroma
of the ink is maxed out, to "maximize" the size of a given printer/substrate
gamut, provided there is no ink dripping or puddling.
To do this technique manually, in principles, a series of CMYK ramps is ran
through the RIP and then Lch measurements are manually recorded for each
percentage of the ramps (0% to 100% in steps of 5% or 10%). Typically,
beyond a certain ink percentage, depending on the ink colors, no more chroma
value can be had. That point is the point where ink should be limited.
To do this technique in practice depends a lot on the RIP at hand. Some RIPs
offer complete manual control on ink limit while others don't offer any such
control at all.
