This is very interesting. I took random L*a*b readings from a
linerization I'm working on and used the L*a*b to LCH values
calculated from www.brucelindbloom.com.
I can plainly see a 'hook' in my Cyan and I'd agree that I'd want to
cut off my ink per channel there. However, my Yellow and Magenta
appear relatively straight and linear though I believe I would need
to clip them far earlier than the 'L*a*b/LCH' Hook method would
indicate.
Furthermore, the values I manually charted do not appear to match the
values I see in the EFI ColorProof display. I can assume it is not a
strict L*a*b/LCH hook method. For instance, I can clearly see a very
large Magenta hook in the EFI ColorProof where the L*a*b/LCH hook
shows absolutely none. Likely some special sauce being applied here.
