I dug up this post from Sept of 2006 about the stability of this paper and
was wondering if anyone, including Martin who posted about his problems with
it, had any recent experience with it. We are considering using it with
Epson 4800/4880 (K3 inks) printers and EFI rips for contract proofing and
would of course not want to deal with some the some of the problems
described below. Did EFI or their paper supplier ever fix this problem? Is
it working for anyone with this combination of printers and inks?

Subject: EFI Offset Proofpaper 9200 Semimatt - follow-up post
On 23 August I posted here stating that we had noticed problems with
longevity of proofs made on this stock.

Further tests confirmed our suspicion that proofs made on this stock using
an Epson 9600 with standard Epson inks would yellow significantly over a
period of 4 weeks.
We did not have enough batches of stock to work out if we were using a dud
batch or whether this was a problem with the that was common to the stock.
However, we did receive an email from EFI confirming that they too had noted
this problem and were working on a new stock which would be free of
yellowing and which was less prone to powdering when cut - and offering to
supply us with some stock for testing.
Unfortunately, it appears that this new stock isn't sufficiently developed
for us to start using it now and is unlikely to be available until late
October - so we have been forced to move to a different stock which has a
better reputation for stability.
This has put us in a difficult position commercially. We have a large number
of proofs in the hands of clients that are now incorrect and will not yield
the same results as the Passed Stickers we stuck to them and the dE
measurements that we made before they left our shop.
Sticking with EFI would have (perhaps) given us some leverage to get some
replacement stock and offer customers replacements for the inaccurate
proofs.
It would have also allowed us to:
1. Use a paper whose surface characteristics we prefer to the competition
2. Maintain the FOGRA Certification that we have already paid for
Instead we are going to end up using a GMG semimatt proof paper which has a
surface texture that we personally feel is inferior and a FOGRA
certification that has a caveat, replacing client proofs at our cost and
having to spend another £500 to re-certify for ISOCoated and ISO Web Coated
:-(
You can probably appreciate that I'm not happy with this situation.
I expected more from EFI (and their chosen paper manufacturers) in terms of
production quality control and more from FOGRA in terms of longevity testing
(or testing that the production paper matched the stock that was submitted
for approval).
We are still committed to the kind of open workflow exemplified by FOGRA -
but proofs that have a useful life of less than four weeks don't meet our
definition of a "Contract Proof".
