Tom asked a really simple question and it did not include the CG in the topic so why complicate the subject matter? To whose benefit? And Derrick includes a "c", thanks : ) > I AGREE THIS IS A GREAT MONITOR AT A PREMIUM PRICE. Derrik, is $2,700 really a "premium price" or are we used to buying inexpensive second rate monitor for cheap, and now the perspective has changed. Remember not that long ago when a Barco reference monitor (21" CRT) was like $5,000.? Now compare that to a CG211 at HALF that price, and we're still calling $2,700. an "expensive, premimum priced" monitor?
Today $2700 is a lot. Give you another example, SONY about one year ago released a 10bit 20 inch LCD with full ddc communication. $699.00 retail. i have one. its a killer little display but sony pulled the plug on the program, do you know why? there were LOTS of great displays available for low dollars. this isnt trashing the CG line. its a great product. Ask how many thought the Artisan was a premium at $2k? Lots. The decision you need to make is if you need that quality level to
work
efficiently, and if
super accurate soft proofing is truley a critical part of yoru workflow.
>DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST DISPLAY ACTUALLY CERTIFIED WITH A PIECE
OF SOFTWARE FOR ONSCREEN PROOFING? IT WAS A CINEMA DISPLAY WASNT IT? Derrik, you know as well as I do the "certification" is not all about performance. Let's put any Eizo CG screen up side by side against a Cinema Screen and just take the gloves off.
Im well versed in where you are trying to go here and it is about performance. The cinema displays are plentiful in the screen proofing market by orders of magnitudes, the eizos are not. they are not because the added cost is hard to justify. I love the Eizos (CGs) but they have their place. one aspect of any monitors performance (unless that's the only aspect you care about). Color space, viewing angle, warranty, luminance accuracy, etc. etc. SO, what's the best all around performer for the $$$....that's the real question. Read your warranty VERY carefully. And finally you get to what Tom asked! Whats the best for my money if $1600 is the top end?
Apple, Lacie 321 Possibly HP then CE Eizo for the money? Apple then HP The convenience of hardware control is very cool. in such a case you are looking at something in the high teens. Id choose LaCie 321 over the CE240. Surprised yet? I have proven to myself that for most of my clients the cinema display can do the job, i face customers every day asking me to help them cost justify the eizo cg line. it gets harder and harder. the instruments are good, software is good. if a critical customer wants to save money on displays, today they can. > TO ANSWER TOMS REAL QUESTION WITH PERTINENT INFORMATION THE CE240
IS A PVA PANEL WHICH HAS LIMITED VIEW ANGLE, BUT DOES HAVE DDC-LIKE
HARDWARE CONTROLS WHICH IS A GOOD THING. BUT THE VIEW ANGLE ISSUE
OVERRIDES THIS ADVANTAGE IMHO. NOW THE APPLE HAS AN IPS PANEL, MUCH
LESS VIEW ANGLE SHIFTS. NO HARDWARE CALIBRATION. ID OPT FOR THE
LATTER SO MY PICTURE DOESNT CHANGE IF MY BUDGET WAS LIMITED.
CE line is ok but they can be quite finicky. And the color shifts are rather large. Uses PVA panel. The CG is much nicer. Uses S-IPS panel. So now Apple has IPS, but is it a S-IPS? Is the same grade panel? Well, let's do some math. The Cinema Screen cost alot less, so what do you think? Can Apple or anyone else sell a top of the range product for less than it cost to make it? No.
That's why Apple screen is MADE IN CHINA.
Hey Robert, so is your EyeOne Display2, it works fine . a lot of your printers components are also made there, so?
That's why Apple has no DDC support. That's why Apple has 1 year warranty, Eizo is 5.
WHat part is 5 years robert? read carefully. Eizo just invested 40 million in a new facility and reaserch to develop the next generation of panels.
Eizo making the panels? nope, Hitachi or LG?
As for the vette comment................... Like toms budget / performance question......................all i cared about was straight line given what was on the table for testing. choose ferrari or vette. the vette won and it was cheaper. thats what mattered to me. that was my criteria. As for CG versus ACD, Ive done the relentless testing its closer than most think, hardware communication aside.
