And exactly why can HP make a printer which works decently with its
default drivers while Epson delivers superb printers with lousy native
drivers ? Why should users need a third party RIP at all ?
I think HP is getting the point about integration and usability as a
lot of rave posts in various forums are showing. Whether they are
actually delivering superior final print quality is a different issue,
but history shows that usability wins over quality in the mass market.

I am a HP z3100 fan. The black and white quality is gorgeous and the
added gamut makes it a beautiful full color printer. 200 year
stability is a worthy bonus.
The bundled Colorburst RIP does a great job with Epson papers. One
must purchase XProof full release from Colorburst to obtain built in
linearization/profiling support for other media. $1221 for your 3800
Pro is a super deal. Congratulations. Considering that it cost
$250,000 to purchase an IRIS printer/RIP in 1995 (to get that level
of quality), your investment is amazing.
