Well, ok, I'm a bit harsh here.
I speak only from a prosumer photo perspective. The typical problem
here is getting a single RGB image on paper. In my experience Epson
drivers get the job done, but they typically block up the shadows and
lose highlight detail because of inadequate linearisation, and this is
something profiling is not really designed to fix even if it will
correct it somewhat.
Better quality on RGB seems to be one of the reasons why ImagePrint is
still selling well. Gutenprint should do well too, but I guess it's
just too fussy for the Photo crowd.
It will be encouraging if the 3800 does better with respect to
linearisation with native drivers.

Edmund,
Geeez - isn't that kind of a broad brush. Perhaps in the rapid evolution
of software and hardware, there have been glitches between the two, however,
to brand Epson's drivers as "lousy" is kinda wide, don't you think? While I
have always had a lot respect for HP's office products (lasers and drafting
plotters), where were they not that long ago when the only solution for our
digital art and photo needs was a $150,000.00 IRIS? At least for me,
Epson's drivers have typically performed well, when properly and well
profiled. And yes, it would be nice if their drivers handled all situations
for which specialty RIPS are needed such as postscript files, press
proofing, and direct CMYK applications, but then I am afraid many would be
paying a lot more for features that are not needed or tailored for their
specific needs.
