So far, I've only seen the 2200, 4800 (which is said to be equal to
the bigger ones). And I'm seeing a definite rise in the number of
people who contact me who use HP whom I would have expected to be
using Epson.
If the 3800 is really so much better I'm delighted to hear it - maybe
the existing 2400, 4800, 7800 and 9800 units can benefit from the same
halftoning and driver improvements ?

You should define the printer and the driver before you go too much
farther. There's a pretty significant difference between how the
linearization behaves in an Epson 1280 or 2200 versus a 3800.
