A friend's 7200 has died and he's looking to replace it. How do the new
Canon and HP's compare to the Epsons right now?
We have had a Canon IPF5000 in for testing for a couple weeks. The good
news is that it is producing beautiful prints in both black & white &
color via the included 16 bit photoshop plug in. It's been printing on a
variety of papers from 8.5x11 Costco gloss to Concord Rag fine art
sheets, as well as some Ilford pearl roll stock hanging around. We're
not going for precise color, but pleasing color and getting it after
fooling around with the media types and profiles we can find. Not a jam
or misfeed, nozzell drop out or any other printing issue in two weeks.
HOWEVER, the documentation is next to non- existent. Even Canon's own
paper types can be hard to classify and applying the "right" canned
profile is sort of hit or miss. The paper type has to be synched between
the hardware settings and the software settings for it to print (most of
the time). We've just gotten it connected to our Wasatch Rip, and will
try to profile a paper ourselves, so stay tuned.
There is a wiki http://canonipf5000.wikispaces.com/ that has been very
helpfull.
My main interest in it is as a sheet fed device. We have roll fed
Roland, Mimaki and HP 5000's for our larger work. I'm also interested in
it's big brother the 9000 to replace the HP's and Roland. That remains
to be seen.
