That may be true for the "casual Photoshopper", but a dedicated professional
with an interest in quality (even if that should translate into less ease of
use), the naming standardization could be a godsend.
And if 20 profiles need to be used in a given workflow, I would personally
prefer to be able to figure out exactly what each of them can do, who made
them, with what tools, with what aims in mind, etc. The more precise the
info, the better, in my view.
By the way, I think that the "cprt" tag that is found in ICC color profiles
could be put to better use by creators of custom profiles than is the case
at present. The text in this tag is fully editable, and the creator of a
profile could use it to provide a summary description of how the profile was
created (e.g., using ProfileMaker 5.0.7, with GCR3 Separation, Black Width
100, 320 CMYK Max, 95 Black Max, Logo Chroma Plus Gamut Mapping, Neutral
Gray Perceptual Rendering Intent, 40 Black Start, and any other useful info
that may be relevant).
The "cprt" tag is easily viewable and editable using the ColorSync Utility
in Mac OS X. A large amount of text can be added (I am not sure how much
before one is no longer allowed to add any), and the profile can be re-saved
with the changes.
Just a thought.
