This is an interesting question.

Just to get the ball rolling :)

I believe most members of this list would prefer to support an Xrite
i1 Display calibrator these days for professional use :)

Laptops are hopeless here. The 20" iMac might possibly be sufficient
for your purpose, is my feeling. The best would be one of the big
boxes and either an Apple 20" monitor or, better, one of the smaller
Eizo screens. Getting a used Powermac and adding a screen might bea
good way to do it.. Some of those old models have issues, I'd go for
a second hand two-processor model without water cooling, for safety.

I never deal with press (just photographers who work in rgb) but I
assume that if you add an inkjet printer with decent canned profiles,
you should be able to make proofs if the printer gives you press
profiles. Many members of this list would be able to profile the
printer for you..

Greetings synchers,

Am back on the list after almost a year...
Am going to buy some kind of Mac computer that has a good monitor for
color-correcting photos.

The photos are part of a natural history book destined for sheet-fed litho
press.
Important aspects:
Color-correction will be the only use this system is put to; I'm trying to
finish this book so I can get on with my life. Thus, it's not important
that the system be loaded with cool features to meet all conceivable future
needs. It matters only that the monitor give good color, can be
calibrated with a Spyder or similar, and that the system can run whatever
version of OS X runs Photoshop 7.
My existing G3 peapod iMac runs well but the monitor is not up to this
task. Essentially I'm buying a new system to get a decent monitor, one
that will make proper calibration and color correction possible.

I have little idea what is out there currently, or what they cost. Any
guidance would really help.

cheers for 2007,
