Personnally, I don't see it as an absolute requirement. We'd wish it'd be so
but it does not preclude doing a quality job.
We have the choice: wait for the next manufacturer to come up with a
technology that delivers as deep and as rich black luminance as the best
CRTs used to feature, or accept the limits of today's best LCD technology
and live with black luminance levels of around 0,45 Cd/m2 (measured with a
Minolta CS-100 at 15 lux ambient illuminance on my Eizo, white point
calibrated at 95 cd/m2 with ColorEyes Display Pro).
Incidently, my old Mitsu900u CRT black luminance shows 0,28 cd/m2 in the
same conditions (RGB=0,0,0 in Photoshop, with monitor profile assigned).
Draw your own conclusions...
