This has been a really interesting thread. The photographers have been branded as uneducated , uncaring , lacking in experience and knowledge , and of having simian characteristics. We've been told what we are and not allowed to do. We are unremittingly told about how our business should be run by 'experts' who obviously know nothing about the mechanics of the modern day advertising photography at the high end. Yet should we dare to venture our opinions as to how the workflow should run , we are shot down because we don't separate to CMYK using process cameras and film.

I don't think that your summing up of this debate is entirely accurate.

Photographers were not described as "monkeys" - that term was reserved for pre-press people who couldn't separate images as well as photographers :-)

I also don't think that photographers should be singled out as demons in this debate because there are plenty of other people in the production chain that are also prepared to drive the knife into the backs of pre-press people - printers and designers for instance.

All have the option to hire knowledgeable and skilled pre-press people to help them get the job done - but few do.

There is a very small minority of photographers who do put in the hours and the investment necessary to get this stuff done right. There is an even smaller subset that invest much of their time in educating others - and I know that you are one of those people.

But, from my POV, any photographer (or printer, or designer) who is prepared to provide CMYK for free is putting another pre-press person out of work. And I don't think that giving the client an ever *cheaper* product is a good enough reason for doing that.

You know that I'm prepared to fight with photographers against "Royalty Free" - why can't photographers fight against "Repro Free"?
