Hi Martin.
I must admit that it was partly driven by rant , and I should , of
course , have applied the usual rules of an overnight breather before
sending.
Photographers were not described as "monkeys" - that term was
reserved for pre-press people who couldn't separate images as well
as photographers :-)
My sincere apologies.
Although I do think that it's a little unfair to reserve the term
for pre press. I must admit that as a group ,us smudgers do have a
number of individuals who might have the all necessary
qualifications :-) .
I also don't think that photographers should be singled out as
demons in this debate because there are plenty of other people in
the production chain that are also prepared to drive the knife into
the backs of pre-press people - printers and designers for instance.
Without a doubt.
But, from my POV, any photographer (or printer, or designer) who is
prepared to provide CMYK for free is putting another pre-press
person out of work.
I fully agree . They are not only putting pre press people out of
work , but a raft of others by re-enforcing the myth that 'digital '
equates to 'cheap' .
And I don't think that giving the client an ever *cheaper* product
is a good enough reason for doing that.
The problem we all face is the' just good enough' philosophy that has
become many clients mantra these days , and ,as you know, there are
far too many suppliers already queuing up to work at that level .
Short of convincing the agencies clients that there is a better way ,
I'm not entirely sure as to how we reverse this trend . Any answers
out there , or is this subject out of bounds for this list ?
You know that I'm prepared to fight with photographers against
"Royalty Free" -
I do . I also know that you do a lot of other 'voluntary work' for
the industry that is above and beyond the call of duty .
why can't photographers fight against "Repro Free"?
Funny you should say that. The AOP has just made the first steps
along those lines . The idea is to produce (yet another :-0 ) set of
guidelines for pricing for photographers supplying digital images.
The NUJ has already carried out the same exercise .

Can't say that I agree with their prices , or even the idea of set
pricing , but at least it's a step in the right direction. All
comments gratefully received , on or off list .
And for the record , I 'll do anything I can to fight against "Repro
Free" , and spread the word.
Regards,
Bob Marchant.
