HELP! - Fiery RIP Gray issues

Hello all,

I am using a Fiery Q1 RIP on a Canon C-1 digital color printer. I am having a problem getting levels of black only (e.g. - C=0% M=0% Y=0% K=20%) to print with black toner only. Here is my setup:

I have created a custom profile for the printer, only minor tweaks to make satisfactory results. That seems to work just fine. I use "U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2" as my CMYK simulation profile so that my prints "match" the printers proofs. That is seeming to work just fine. The simulation method is "Full (output GCR)" The problem I am having is that when I use the simulation profile (U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2), all K only values are printed as a CMY black or gray, and I need a threshold of 3% of a color before the printer will put down toner. There is also a noticeable amount of color banding in the 1/4 tones of a black to white gradient. When I turn off the simulation and only go through my output profile, K only values are printed using only black toner, a 1% K value will show up on the print using only K toner and the banding is gone, but the output colors are now not simulating the press proofs. All conversions are Relative colorimetric. When I change the simulation method to "Full (source GCR), the K only values are printed using K only, but my profile edits are not shown, because I would have to edit the front end of the output profile, which I have heard is not the recommended method for what I am doing. All of the literature that I have read that came with the RIP and printer says that all "Rich Black" and "Pure Black" settings affect only C=0% M=0% Y=0% K=100% or C=M=Y.

Why is "U.S. Sheetfed Coated v2" turning my K only values into a CMY gray, and why do I need 3% of a color in my file before it will show up on the printout?!? We do a lot of product shots on a white background (pure white background gradating into a neutral product shadow!), and the banding and 3% threshold is killing me!

Please help me! The Rogaine is not keeping up with my hair loss over this!
