One of the things I think is really exceptional about this printer (that even the Barcelona guy didn't realize) is that the gloss opimizer (GO) can be printed on the image only, and not on the white borders around an image. If you go into the driver's custom options for the GO you can choose between "off", "Econo mode" and "Whole Page". Despite the fact that their documentation inaccurately states that the Econo mode puts the GO on the white areas of an image, it actually does the opposite. Econo mode puts the GO on all areas *except* those with absolute paper white. So as long as your image doesn't have any RGB=255 or CMYK=0 areas (which it shouldn't) the gloss optimizer will print only on the image areas and not on the paper white borders, simulating a spot varnish. Makes sense? I think this is significant for prepress markets and they should be bragging about this feature.
****Most of the guys in Barcelona **** know the three possibilities of GE . Off, Eco, and Whole Page. The GE is applied whoever with an algorithm , even in Whole Page mode. It is a very complex algorithm that was done actually quite early on in the dev of the writing system. It is tweaked to the point where the eng.s would or will not need to look at improving it. It is already about as good as you can do with a GE.
Now I use mostly GE on Eco mode, it does leave the whites without dot untouched. IF you want the image to cover all inked areas and the whites but not the page white you do a selection on the image border, run a levels or curve, whatever method you will to bring the levels to white=254 all around.
I use GE on Whole page for Glossy and photos repro, eco for batch printing and proofing.
I don't sell HPs, so can not quote pricing on the APS. I was given a figure
well below ProfileMaker, but don't know where it settled out at in the
final decision.
I am told it will be about $500 and be a RGB and CMYK enabled version of PMP's printer module. HP's driver locks you into their ~600 patch RGB target but with the APS option you can use any PMP target.
It wasn’t fixed in stone the last time I asked. That is a little less than I thought but in any case it will be a bargain for a PMP 5 lite with editor included, and another i1 Display. The editor functions as an on the fly client preferred color editor. So no need to tweak an original but tweak a profile that can be used as a client biased profile for future jobs. Quite a few more uses but the list is long here. I don’t think this version can load any test charts the PMP 5 can but the TC 9.18 and ECI 2002 charts are pretty good for this inkjet printer, and included in the test charts for APS. BTW the built in “Easy” profiler actually makes very good profiles for matte media.
It's not such an exercise in futility with these new HP printers because it's actually generating custom ink limits and linearization based on spectral data for that paper. Certainly a step in the right direction.
Exactly. Third party RIP’s will offer users who seek control over crossovers and screening options that will answer to the niche market. The SDK for the Z is substantial. I have been trying as many rip’s as I can and each one has it’s specific advantage and or solution for the target market.
Isn't the swappable MK/PK option the same in all K3 Epson printers?
Yes, but swapping is one of the number one complaint about these printers. Now that Canon and HP's printers have both inks installed all the time, Epson's lack of this feature stands out. But they are about to fix that.
Only HP have a dedicated head for the Matte Black. Epson and Canon use intelligent switching, but not as good as a dedicated head and tubing.
