Dear Scott,

This is an interesting question. I suspect you're in the midst of comparing
various products and you have to make a decision or you're stuck with
someone's poor results and you're trying to make some sense of the
situation.

To my knowledge, there isn't a whole heck of a lot of litterature or
reference on linearization, especially an article that would have been
published in some scientific journal that would have compared the pros and
cons or relative perfomance of the various methods RIP manufacturers chose
to put a printer in some pristine state. Perhaps Henry Kang? Or maybe a
paragraph or two in Colour Engineering? We'll see whoever else responds.

It's interesting to note that some RIPs like Onyx and CGS use a strict
density approach to linearization while others, like GlobalGraphics use a
pure Lab approach. ColorBurst was known to use chroma approach until
recently. GMG uses Lab, I think.

Personally, I don't feel one approach is all that superior to others
although I always liked GlobalGraphics approach more than the others
(ProofReady Plug-in used with SetGold). In the end, I'm always surprised to
see that good color matching results can be had despite what seems like poor
results out of some RIP's linearization procedures.
