I confess I missed the beginning of this thread but I thought I would add
that, personally, when given the choice, I tend to assign my custom press
profile to the incoming CMYK file to anticipate where the "dammages" will
likely be. I find this approach is especially valid when no hardcopy proofs
were supplied with the job: who's to say, then, what's the correct color
appearance? I admit I end up converting frequently, after doing this
analysis, but I first try assigning, just to see. Does not cost anything. As
a matter of fact, I know of some printers who do this as a matter of policy
when they the client seems worried about the color quality (aren't we all?),
they'll preview the file with their custom press profile and take it from
there. It think it's neat. But I think that's what you were hinting,
further, in your reply (which I clipped -- appologies).
