Dan,
You made all valid points in your arguments. The white border seems like an
exellent idea -- I have yet to experiment with this technique. Your points
about getting a close colorimetric match between screen and proof
measurements are on the money; it's one thing to get the numbers to match
but it's another to get a genuine appearance match.
I would like to comment on your suggestion with regards to using the SPD of
an actual viewing booth.
I once took part in an experiment, at GATF, where an Epson profile was made
to match (simulate) an analog Matchprint. Assume there were no fluorescence
on the inkjet side of things -- there weren't any, for sure, on the
Matchprint side of the equation, just not to get bogged down in arguing the
influence of OBs here. Both characterization targets were measured with the
same Spectroscan table, both in spektral mode. When creating the output
profiles with ProfileMakerPro, we use the spkt measurements of a GTI light
booth -- not D50, as the viewing light source. In the end, when we finally
examined the simulation of the Matchprint by the inkjet under the GTI booth,
having gone through the proper ICC color conversion, it was plain to see
that the overall match was nothing to write home about. Could it be the
measurement of the GTI was off? Could it be... Many things could have gone
wrong. But I felt we might as well use D50 as the viewing light source for
I don't think we would have been all that worse off, visually.
