Richard et al.,
I think you are still missing or ignoring my point about retailer profits.
My upgrade from CS to CS2 in April 2005, cost me £146. To upgrade now from
CS2 to CS3 would cost me £163, an increase of £17 over two years (11.6%) and
inflation accounts for about half of that increase. So the cost of CS3 in
the UK has not doubled - its more or less the same as it was two years ago.
What has happened is that due to the vagaries of the international exchange
rate, Americans are now earning half as much and paying half as much (in UK
terms), as they were when the dollar/pound ratio was 1/1.
If, because of this change in the exchange rate, Adobe were to reduce the
price of CS3 in the UK, software retailers in the UK would suffer a loss in
income. Since software retailers and Adobe staff in the UK are hardly likely
to welcome a drop in income, keeping the prices in the UK roughly constant
through the always-varying exchange-rate differences, seems a more sensible
long-term solution. After all, we wouldn't like it if the prices suddenly
went up because the £ dropped. International companies have to strive to
avoid constant price changes in their various markets because of
exchange-rate shifts. They have to budget over the long-term, and "what you
gain on the swings, you lose on the roundabouts".
Just my one pence worth!
Bob Frost.

Well that's getting right to the point Martin. It isn't fair at all and
people should realize that this inequity also applies to software bought
here and then registered for use in the UK. There's no good reason for
it.
I'm sure that you would agree with me that two wrongs don't make a
right<G>
When a company with a dominant market position such as Adobe treat many of
it's customers with total disdain, then I suggest that it behoves everyone
to say enough is enough.
