Let's assume we were having this debate at the Pro Imaging site
rather than here...
My argument to you would be that photographers do not have the power
or the organisation to challenge the business interests at work here.
Some people on this list may contribute to Open Source projects. They
have no problem with providing their time and skills on collaborative
projects without getting immediate compensation. They will do this
for the challenge, the credit and perhaps with a view to getting
future commissions to develop their work for whoever wants to hire them.
Perhaps that model could work fine for photographers also? But I
doubt it.
My personal view is that there is one very obvious difference between
these economic models: the middle-men don't get to dictate the terms
in Open Source.
Contrary to your opinion, I am keen to work with Adobe to see
positive developments in this area. We met with James Alexander back
in 2005 to discuss these issues in great detail and were generally
supportive of his vision of how Adobe were going to develop in this
area.
But, as we predicted at the time, even his best efforts were doomed
to failure because of the powerful position of the middle-men in the
stock industry.
The problem now is that we are left with Adobe still at first base -
selling RF - and therefore appearing to be fully supportive of the RF
economic model.
