Is there any way in which InDesign can output Images embedded with a
CMYK profile differing from the CMYK working space without performing a
conversion? I've tried various settings, but the only way I've found to
prevent the conversion is to ensure all CMYK images are tagged with a
profile identical to the working space.

Mike, I think the transform is happening somewhere else, as you suggested. I can embed an image here (honoring the embedded profile or not) and get the same values after printing to my RIP.
