Actually, Scott, a rendering intent in the print dialog would be very
cumbersome and not all that productive. The way it works,
currently, is that
every placed image in InDesign is its own Source in the
ProfileToProfile
transform. So, let's take the example of a 96 page magazine with
photos
placed with various embedded profiles on every pages: can you
imagine what
the Print dialog box would have to look like if it had to present some
interface to the user to allow selecting a rendering intent for
each and
every photos placed?!
That's why I feel the present interface is a good compromise. In
Photoshop,
it's a one to one relationship (one source and one destination).
But in
InDesign, it's a many to one relationship (many sources but one
destination). Bruce Fraser suggested once having the option of more
than one
destination profile, to allow for various kgen but, een though that
idea had
merit on its own, judging by the time it takes Adobe to implement
an Lch
readout option in the Info palette, I don't think we'll ever see
that idea
realized.
Have to whole-heartedly disagree, Roger. InDesign's current color
controls could be improved. A dialogue with appropriate color
controls wouldn't need to list EVERY image and its color status.
Although wouldn't it make sense to be able to review that in
conjunction with the Links pallet?
The output/conversion controls should have:
1) settings for color handling of RGB, CMYK, Grayscale, and Lab -
separately
2) each of those color spaces should have:
a) rendering intent - perfectly understandable to want different
rendering intents for different color spaces
b) assumed profile - to be used on untagged elements
c) BPC options
d) option to NOT color manage - so we could avoid transforming black
and grayscale items
3) the option to override embedded profiles AND rendering intents
(R=G=B) = K would be nice, too.
